Notes: The top selling rum in its native land, Puerto Rico, Don Q was little known anywhere else till recently. Long a producer for other rum lines they decided to get credit where credit is due by putting their own name on their products. All natural, and in the case of their flavored rums, all natural flavorings, Don Q offers a variety of rums of various ages and price points along with a few flavored rums. They include the Cristal, Gold, Anejo and the Grand Anejo in the unflavored line and this the Limón, Cocoa and Mojito in the flavored line.
Appearance: Crystal clear, with long legs rapidly forming after swirling. No separation of alcohol and oils.
First Impression: Smells very much like a key lime when you slice it - which is a delicate lemony/citrus sort of flavor with the sweetness and complexity of a lime but lighter - lots of key lime oil in there. Only hints of alcohol- aromatic oils cover it and push it into the background. Very unusual for someone to use a key lime (a real key lime that is - not some chemicals ) takes a lot of dedication (and no small expense) to get it right.
Taste: Very smooth and seductive. Really nicely done for a flavored rum. The Key Lime oils taste very natural - completely the opposite of most flavored rums or vodkas (and God knows most key lime pies!) . A bit sweeter and I would have said this was an excellent Limoncello.
Drinks: Made an excellent Cosmopolitan (substitute out lemon vodka). Also worked out well for anything that I wanted an extra boost of key lime oil as the rum was very smooth and did not step on other ingredients much .Also did some experiments using it in a sour mix - worked well for some applications.
Cigars: A bit too delicate for most cigars but cuts cigar taste wonderfully.
Final Thoughts: Very well made. If you want a Limon Rum, forget the other Puerto Rican Rum and grab this one.
Bottle:Very lightly green tinted clear glass with lightly translucent frosting. Lettering and design are all silk screened directly onto the glass. Very pleasing and attractive proportions and lines to the bottle. Black neckwrap with lemon yellow lettering "Limon" in script and black ribbed screw off cap - the threading of which seems questionable. Their trademark "knight on horse" (who could that be?) silk-screened on front.
