Wine - Fruit/Dessert - Blueberry (Huber Winery)
Blueberry Dessert Wine
100 Blueberries (See Description)
PROOF: 36 (18%)
AGE: 1-2 Years
PRICE: $ 20 - 375 ML
Notes: This wine was produced by Huber winery in Borden, Indiana. They also produce number of other wines and a few brandies. Unlike some for their others this is a port-style wine (at least for lack of a better description). It starts off with a eau de vie distilled in a small pot still, which is then rested or aged for one year. Meanwhile, a blueberry wine is produced, and the two are married for one year before release. This is most similar to a port production method than the other wines we are reviewing.
Appearance: Deep red/berry color, no sediment whatsoever. On swirling, it leaves a thin clear coat on the inside of the glass.
First Impression: Very clean, heavy bouquet of blueberries.
Taste: Sweet and heavy on the tongue, with a plump, round taste to it. A slight warming of alcohol as it goes down the throat and the slightly oily/thick tail of blueberry at the end.
Drinks: Like the others, it makes a wonderful ingredient for a variation of the classic Kir Royale (Champagne with Cassis), and again, like the other dessert wine by Mr Huber, (and unlike most dessert wines and liqueurs) this is not sweetened to death. It adds to but does not interfere with the champagne the way a liqueur can. It also yields a somewaht less alcoholic drink by using a wine rather than a liqueur.
Final Thoughts: While I am not a huge fan of fruit or dessert wine, this one certainly is different from most. It would be a pleasant drink on a hot summer day and should make a interesting ingredient for a number of cocktails.
Bottle: Tall 375 ML bottle dark blue bottle with attractive silk screened graphics and text. Sealed with a fair amount of wax to prevent air from spoiling the contents.
