Rum - Ron Zacapa Centenario
Licorera Zacapaneca, S.A.
Licorera Zacapeca, Mexico, Guatemala
Age: 23 Years
Price: $37.00 750ml
Notes: There is a very distinct difference between the different countries and territories in which rum is distilled. As a very general rule, Central and South American rum tends to be heavier in body, and have more complex, spicy notes than some of its island cousins. It's almost like comparing a fruitcake to a banana bread in terms of both weight complexity, and even color.
Rum from the two Americas is very distinct form, and very delightful in their its own right. That is, if it is good rum from that area as they are also the producers of the worst some of the worst rotgut I've ever encountered- and that's saying something. This is one of the rums that falls into the former category. Distilled in state of the art stills then aged in white oak casks in Barraques (a form of stacking and aging of barrels seen in the production of brandies and cognacs) and bottled at a staggering (for rum) 23 years of age.
Appearance: Dark copper/bronze color bright and clear with no hazing separation or floating sediments. Long legs develop on swirling.
First Impression: Sweet vanilla, caramelized peaches, preserved bananas, molasses, cassis (elderberries), flowers, apricots, and ripe black calamirna figs.
Taste: Sweet, flowing entry, heavy bodied and delicious. The nut butter, spicy, hint of leather, and slightly spicy drying finish with hint of pepper (from the oak) is a wonderful contrast to the start.
Drinks: Works well in most rum drinks calling for a dark heavy rum. Assertive enough to stand up to those umbrella drinks but doesn't overpower more subtle potions. Cheap enough to actually use if you want to show off without breaking the bank, and full bodied enough not to disappear in a drink.
Cigars: A good spicy cigar with a full body. Opus X, Hemingway or Davidoff - Maduro or Oscuro would be best.
Final Thoughts: A seriously decadent rum experience. Amazingly cheap for the age even for a rum. Try buying anything else that is 23 years old (and so tasty) for three times as much (approx $100) - can't be done.
Bottle/Packaging: Clear glass, long slightly bell shaped, flared at bottom.
