TITLE: Gin: The Much Lamented Death of Madam Geneva
AUTHOR: Patrick Dillon
PUBLISHER: Justin, Charles & Co., 354 Pages
TYPE: Reference
COST: $27.95 US
A entertaining book on early gin history in England, and its social and economic impact on English society in the beginings of the industrial age.
This book traces gin (actually Dutch Genever) which was brought back by the british troops who discovered it in Holland, through its heyday in the 18th century in England and to some degree beyond. While not as exhaustive on some points as Craze, and not making as many modern day parallels, it is an entertaing and informative read. It is a excellent reference on gin for the gin crazed scholars of drink.
